Marble house is a gilded age mansion in newport rhode island designed as a summer cottage for alva and william kissam vanderbilt by the society architect richard morris hunt it was unparalleled in opulence for an american house when it was completed in 1892. Marble house project rents its facilities throughout the year. It was a summer house or cottage as newporters called them in remembrance of the modest houses of the early 19th century. The original house was quarried from the property and later additions incorporated danby marble to its facade.

Located at 596 bellevue avenue it is now open to the public as a museum. The residency integrates sustainable practices including small scale organic food production and waste conservation.
